It can be scary when a consultant first thinks about going into business for themselves. It’s even scary for someone who’s been a consultant for awhile also. Sometimes one wonders, if they’re struggling, if they’re cut out for the independent consulting business.

From the book “Is Self Employment For You” by Paul Casey, comes this little test that one can take to see if they actually have what it takes to work independently. If one answers the questions truthfully, one can at least gauge themselves to see if they have the mentality to give working for themselves a shot, or whether they should even think about staying in the game. Sure, the benefits can be wonderful, but the stress can be incredible.

Of course, if you don’t do well on this test, it doesn’t mean that you should give up the game and get a regular 9-5 paying job again. Basically, like other evaluations, its interpretations can somewhat be taken with a grain of salt. However, depending on how you answer the questions, you may discover that there are certain aspects you might want to work on to improve your chances for being more effective as a sole proprietor.
